June, July and August from North America
Summer flights abroad: when to book and when to fly
Summer is the busiest season for international travel from the US and Canada, and the fares reward people who book early and fly on the right days. The timing that works, route by route.

Book in the winter
For a June, July or August trip to Europe, the lowest fares are usually on sale from January to March. By May the summer seats are selling at full price and the nonstops are filling. The exception is the last ten days of August, when fares fall as schools go back; if the dates can slide that late, wait.
Fly midweek, land on a weekday
Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the cheapest departure days on most transatlantic routes, Fridays and Sundays the most expensive. Returning on a Tuesday rather than a Saturday can save as much as leaving midweek. The agent prices the days either side of the ones you give.
Secondary airports and open jaws
Flying into one city and home from another costs little more than a round trip and saves a day of backtracking. Smaller gateways help too: Dublin, Lisbon, Reykjavik and Copenhagen often undercut London and Paris in summer, and the onward flights in Europe are cheap.
Mexico and the Caribbean in summer
The opposite pattern: summer is the low season on the beach, with resort rates down and flights plentiful. It is hot and humid, the seaweed is heaviest in Cancun, and August and September carry the hurricane risk. For families bound by school holidays it is the cheapest time to go.
India and West Africa
The June to August school break is a peak for family visits to India, Ghana and Nigeria, so those routes behave like Europe: book by March. The monsoon makes India wet but travel is normal; Ghana and Nigeria are in their rainy season too, which is milder than it sounds.
Heat, strikes and the plan B
European summers now bring heat waves that close outdoor sites in the afternoon, and air-traffic strikes that cancel flights with a day's notice. A single-ticket itinerary gives you rebooking rights; travel insurance covers the hotel night. Build one flexible day into each city.
Questions before you call
When is the cheapest time to book summer flights to Europe?
January to March for the lowest fares, with the last ten days of August the cheapest time to actually fly. Booking in May or June means paying the peak.
Is it cheaper to fly into London or somewhere smaller?
Often somewhere smaller. Dublin, Lisbon, Reykjavik and Copenhagen frequently price below London and Paris in summer, and a cheap flight onward gets you to the same place.
