What to do in Las Vegas
Las Vegas is the base for the desert as much as the Strip. The Grand Canyon's West Rim is two and a half hours away and the South Rim is a long day; Hoover Dam is 45 minutes; the Valley of Fire is an hour. Helicopters leave from the airport and the Boulder City field for the canyon and for the Strip at night. Tours collect from the big hotels on the Strip and downtown.
01
Grand Canyon West Rim and the Skywalk
The closest rim, about two and a half hours by bus with the glass Skywalk over the edge. By helicopter you land on the canyon floor.
02
Grand Canyon South Rim
The national park views most people picture, five hours each way by bus or a short flight. A 14 hour day by road; worth it for the real canyon.
03
Hoover Dam
The dam, the power plant tour and the bypass bridge walkway, 45 minutes from the Strip. Half day, often paired with Lake Mead or a Strip night tour.
04
Helicopter over the Strip at night
Twelve to fifteen minutes over the lights, with pickup from the hotels. Short, and the thing most people remember.
05
Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend
The slot canyon and the river bend near Page, Arizona, about four and a half hours each way. A 14 to 16 hour day; the Navajo guides inside the canyon are required.
06
Valley of Fire and Red Rock Canyon
Red sandstone an hour from the Strip, by van, e-bike or ATV. Mornings in summer, any time the rest of the year.

- Reviews from people who went
- Ratings and reviews come from travelers who booked that exact tour. Read the recent ones before you choose.
- Compare before you land
- The hotel tour desk sells what it has left that morning. Booking ahead means you pick the operator, the time and the pickup, with the price in front of you.
Cancellation and payment terms are set per listing and shown on Viator before you book. Check them for the tour you pick.
Good to know
- West Rim or South Rim
- The West Rim is closer and has the Skywalk; it is on Hualapai land, not in the national park. The South Rim is the park and the classic view, and twice the drive.
- Summer heat is serious
- Desert tours start early from May to September and the canyon floor is hotter than the rim. Water is provided; a hat is not.
