Where visitors stay in Mexico City

Mexico City is a collection of neighborhoods that each feel like a town. Roma and Condesa are the leafy, walkable ones with the restaurants; Polanco is the upscale district by the park and the museums; the Centro is the historic grid; Coyoacan is the old village in the south. Ride apps are cheap and the Metro is fast, so any of them works as a base.

  1. 01

    Roma and Condesa

Tree-lined streets, Art Deco buildings, the city's restaurant scene and small design hotels. Walk to dinner, ride to the sights.

    Suits: First visits, couples, food

  2. 02

    Polanco

The upscale quarter next to Chapultepec Park and the Anthropology Museum, with the international hotels and the high-end restaurants.

    Suits: Business trips, luxury, families

  3. 03

    Centro Historico

Hotels in colonial buildings around the Zocalo, steps from the cathedral, the murals and Bellas Artes. Lively by day, quieter at night.

    Suits: History, short stays, budgets

  4. 04

    Coyoacan

Cobbled streets, two plazas and the Frida Kahlo house, 30 to 40 minutes south of the center. Guesthouses more than hotels.

Suits: Slow stays, families visiting the south

Good to know

Traffic decides more than distance
Crossing the city at rush hour can take over an hour. Stay near what you plan to do most, and use the Metro for the Centro and Chapultepec.
Altitude affects sleep the first night
At 7,350 feet, headaches and broken sleep on night one are common. Water, a light dinner and no mezcal until day two.

Questions before you book

Which neighborhood is safest to stay in?

Roma, Condesa, Polanco and Coyoacan are the areas visitors use and are fine with normal city care. In the Centro, stay on the main streets near the Zocalo and take a ride app after dark.

Is Mexico City expensive for hotels?

Compared with US cities, no. Good small hotels in Roma and Condesa are reasonable year-round, with Day of the Dead and Formula 1 week the exceptions.

How do I book a hotel from this page?

Each "See hotels" button opens Expedia's hotel search for that part of Mexico City, with live rates, photos, reviews and the cancellation terms. You book and pay there. All Travel Fun earns a commission on bookings made through those links; it does not change what you pay.

Can your agents book the hotel over the phone?

Our agents book flights. Call to price the flight to Mexico City; book the room on Expedia once your dates are fixed.
