What to do in Accra
Accra is the easiest West African capital for a first visit and the base for the coast. The city itself is a day: Independence Square, the Nkrumah mausoleum, Jamestown's lighthouse and Makola market. Cape Coast and Elmina castles are three hours west and the canopy walk at Kakum is just beyond them, so most people do the coast as a long day or an overnight. Tours collect from city hotels.
01
Cape Coast and Elmina castles
The two largest slave forts on the coast, with the dungeons and the Door of No Return, guided by the castle staff. About three hours each way from Accra. A heavy, necessary day.
02
Kakum canopy walk
Seven rope bridges 100 feet up in the rainforest canopy, 45 minutes from Cape Coast. Usually combined with the castles on a two-day trip.
03
Accra city tour
Independence Square, the Kwame Nkrumah mausoleum, the Jamestown lighthouse and fishing harbour and the W.E.B. Du Bois centre, by car with a guide. Half or full day.
04
Makola market and a food tour
The sprawling central market with a guide to steer you, then jollof, waakye, kelewele and kenkey from the stalls that locals trust.
05
Fantasy coffins in Teshie
The workshops where coffins are carved as fish, planes and shoes, an Accra tradition and a strange, cheerful visit. Often with the arts centre.
06
Aburi gardens and Shai Hills
The botanical gardens in the cool hills above the city, or the savanna reserve with baboons and caves an hour east. Half days.

- Reviews from people who went
- Ratings and reviews come from travelers who booked that exact tour. Read the recent ones before you choose.
- Compare before you land
- The hotel tour desk sells what it has left that morning. Booking ahead means you pick the operator, the time and the pickup, with the price in front of you.
Cancellation and payment terms are set per listing and shown on Viator before you book. Check them for the tour you pick.
Good to know
- Sort the visa before you fly
- US and Canadian citizens need a visa for Ghana, normally applied for in advance; visa on arrival schemes have run in some seasons. Check the current rules with the embassy before booking flights.
- Cedis for the small things
- Cards work at hotels and bigger restaurants; markets, taxis and tips are cash. Change at the airport or a bank, not on the street.

Questions before you book
Can I do Cape Coast in a day from Accra?
Yes, as a 12 to 13 hour day with both castles. Adding Kakum makes it an overnight in Cape Coast or Elmina, which is the better trip.
When is the best time to visit?
November to March is the dry season. December is busy with the diaspora homecoming events; book flights and hotels early for it.
How do I book these tours?
Each "See tours" button opens Viator's listings for that experience in Accra, with live prices, dates, reviews and the cancellation terms. You book and pay there. All Travel Fun earns a commission on bookings made through those links; it does not change what you pay.
Can your agents book tours over the phone?
Our agents book flights. Call to price the flight to Accra; book the tours on Viator once your dates are fixed.
