What to do in Mumbai

Mumbai is India's biggest city and its most compact for a visitor: the Gateway of India, the Victorian railway station, the museums and the markets are all in the old southern tip. Elephanta Island's rock temples are an hour by boat from the Gateway. The suburbs hold the film studios and the national park. Guides handle the trains, the traffic and the timing.

  1. 01

    Elephanta Caves by boat

Seventh-century rock-cut temples to Shiva on an island in the harbour, an hour each way by ferry from the Gateway of India. Closed Mondays.

  2. 02

    Colaba and Fort heritage walk

The Gateway, the Taj hotel, the railway station that looks like a cathedral and the Art Deco seafront, with the stories behind them. Mornings.

  3. 03

    Street food by night

Vada pav, pav bhaji, kebabs on Mohammed Ali Road and kulfi, with a guide who knows which stalls to trust. Replaces dinner.

  4. 04

Dabbawalas, dhobi ghat and the local train

The lunchbox network, the open-air laundry and a ride on the suburban train that moves the city, with a guide who makes it make sense.

  5. 05

    Bollywood studio tour

Film City in the northern suburbs, with sets, a dance workshop on some tours and, if you are lucky, a shoot in progress. Half or full day.

  6. 06

Kanheri Caves and Sanjay Gandhi National Park

Buddhist caves cut into a hillside inside a national park within the city limits. A quiet morning after the noise of the south.

Good to know

Avoid the monsoon if you can
June to September brings heavy rain and flooded streets. November to February is dry and comfortable.
Traffic sets the schedule
Crossing the city can take two hours. Tours group sights by area for a reason; do not plan the south and the suburbs in the same half day.

Is Mumbai walkable?

South Mumbai, from Colaba to the Fort district and Marine Drive, is. Everything else is a taxi, a ride app or the train.

What about the Dharavi tours?

Walking tours of the Dharavi neighborhood exist and some are run by residents who put the money back into the community. If you go, pick one of those and follow their rules on photographs.

How do I book these tours?

Each "See tours" button opens Viator's listings for that experience in Mumbai, with live prices, dates, reviews and the cancellation terms. You book and pay there. All Travel Fun earns a commission on bookings made through those links; it does not change what you pay.
