Where visitors stay in Calgary
Calgary is the gateway and most visitors split their nights between the city and the mountains. Downtown has the business hotels by the tower and the river paths; the Beltline and 17th Avenue hold the restaurants; Kensington is the walkable village across the river. For the mountains, Banff townsite is the classic base inside the park, 90 minutes west, and Canmore, just outside the park gate, is the cheaper one.

Good to know
- Stampede week is its own season
- The first half of July fills every hotel in the city at double the rate. Outside it, Calgary hotels are reasonable.
- Mountain hotels need a lead time
- Banff and Lake Louise sell out months ahead for July and August and for Christmas. Canmore is the pressure valve.

Questions before you book
Should I stay in Calgary or Banff?
Both, usually: a night or two in the city on arrival and departure, and the rest in Banff or Canmore. Day-tripping to the mountains from Calgary works but costs three hours of driving a day.
Is Canmore as good as Banff?
The town is less pretty and sits outside the park, but the mountains are the same, the prices are lower and Banff is 20 minutes away.
How do I book a hotel from this page?
Each "See hotels" button opens Expedia's hotel search for that part of Calgary, with live rates, photos, reviews and the cancellation terms. You book and pay there. All Travel Fun earns a commission on bookings made through those links; it does not change what you pay.
Can your agents book the hotel over the phone?
