Where visitors stay in Montreal

Montreal's visitor hotels sit in three districts a short walk apart. Old Montreal has the boutique hotels in the stone buildings by the river; downtown holds the big hotels along Sherbrooke and the shopping streets, connected to the underground city; the Plateau is the neighborhood of walk-ups, cafes and the Mile End bagel shops; and the Quartier des Spectacles is the festival district between them. The airport is 25 to 40 minutes west.

    Old Montreal

Boutique hotels in 18th and 19th century buildings, next to the basilica, the port and the restaurants. The most atmospheric choice and the priciest.

  2. 02

Downtown and the Golden Square Mile

The large hotels along Sherbrooke and Rene-Levesque, by the museums and the shopping, linked to the underground city for winter.

    Suits: Business, families, winter

  3. 03

    Plateau Mont-Royal

Small inns and rentals among the spiral staircases, cafes and the bars of Saint-Laurent and Saint-Denis, with the mountain park above.

Suits: Local feel, food, longer stays

  4. 04

    Quartier des Spectacles

Newer hotels around the festival squares, in the middle of the jazz, comedy and film festivals in summer.

    Suits: Festivals, shows, nightlife

Good to know

Winter favors downtown
The underground city links downtown hotels to the Metro, malls and offices without going outside. In January that is worth a lot.
Festival season books out
Late June through early August fills everything within walking distance of the festival squares. Book early or stay in the Plateau and walk down.

Questions before you book

Old Montreal or downtown?

Old Montreal for the atmosphere and the evenings; downtown for price, space and the underground city in winter. They are a 15-minute walk apart.

Do I need French?

No. English works in every hotel and restaurant visitors use, and a bonjour goes a long way.

How do I book a hotel from this page?

Each "See hotels" button opens Expedia's hotel search for that part of Montreal, with live rates, photos, reviews and the cancellation terms. You book and pay there. All Travel Fun earns a commission on bookings made through those links; it does not change what you pay.

Can your agents book the hotel over the phone?

Our agents book flights. Call to price the flight to Montreal; book the room on Expedia once your dates are fixed.
