Where visitors stay in Paris
Paris is twenty districts in a spiral and the Metro makes all of them close, so the choice is about the street outside your door. The Marais is the old quarter with the cafes and the small hotels; Saint-Germain is the Left Bank classic; the Louvre and Opera districts are central and grand; the 7th is quiet and residential under the tower; Montmartre is the village on the hill. Charles de Gaulle is 45 to 60 minutes from any of them.
01
Le Marais
Narrow streets, falafel and galleries in the 3rd and 4th, with boutique hotels in old mansions. Walk to Notre-Dame and the Seine; lively late.
Suits: Couples, food, first visits
02
Saint-Germain-des-Pres
The Left Bank of cafes, bookshops and the Luxembourg Gardens, with small elegant hotels. Walk to the Orsay and the river.
Suits: Classic Paris, museums, walkers
03
Louvre and Opera
The grand center: the Louvre, the Palais Royal, the department stores and the big hotels. Central for everything, quieter at night.
Suits: Families, shopping, central base
04
The 7th and the Eiffel Tower
Residential streets, food markets and the tower at the end of the avenue. Calm, pricey near the tower, good for families.
Suits: Families, quiet nights, tower views
05
Montmartre
The hill village with Sacre-Coeur, steep streets and smaller budget hotels. Charming, a longer Metro ride from the center.
Suits: Budgets, atmosphere, repeat visitors

Good to know
- Check the floor and the elevator
- Many Paris hotels are in old buildings with tiny lifts or none. Listings say; if stairs matter, read them.
- Metro over taxi
- A Metro station within five minutes of the hotel is worth more than a famous street. Lines 1, 4 and the RER B cover most visitor routes.

Questions before you book
Which arrondissement is best for a first visit?
The Marais, Saint-Germain or the 1st around the Louvre. All three put the big sights within a walk and a Metro ride of each other.
Is Montmartre too far out?
It is a 20 to 30 minute Metro ride from the center, which is why it is cheaper. Fine for a second visit or a tight budget; less so for a two-night first trip.
How do I book a hotel from this page?
Each "See hotels" button opens Expedia's hotel search for that part of Paris, with live rates, photos, reviews and the cancellation terms. You book and pay there. All Travel Fun earns a commission on bookings made through those links; it does not change what you pay.
Can your agents book the hotel over the phone?
Our agents book flights. Call to price the flight to Paris; book the room on Expedia once your dates are fixed.
