What to do in Bogota

Bogota sits at 8,600 feet in the Andes, so the first day is slow and the air is cool year-round. Monserrate hangs above the city by cable car; La Candelaria, the old quarter, holds the Gold Museum and the Botero collection; and the Salt Cathedral at Zipaquira, carved inside a working mine, is the day trip almost everyone takes. Coffee farms and the Guatavita lagoon are the other long days.

  1. 01

    Monserrate by cable car

The church on the ridge 1,500 feet above the city, with the whole plateau below. Mornings for the clear views; a guide handles the tickets and the line.

  2. 02

    Zipaquira Salt Cathedral

A full cathedral cut 600 feet underground in a salt mine, an hour north. Half day, often with the colonial town of Zipaquira or the Guatavita lagoon added.

  3. 03

La Candelaria, the graffiti and the Gold Museum

The old quarter's street art with the artists' stories, the Botero museum and the Gold Museum's 55,000 pieces. A walking day with a coffee stop.

  4. 04

    Coffee farm day trip

A working finca in the hills outside the city: the plants, the picking, the roasting and the cup. A full day; the big coffee region itself is a flight away.

  5. 05

Paloquemao market and a food tour

Tropical fruit you have never heard of, arepas, ajiaco and chocolate with cheese, with a guide who orders. Mornings at the market.

  6. 06

    Tejo night

Colombia's national game: throw a metal puck at gunpowder targets in a clay pit, with beer. Loud, local and a very good evening.

Good to know

Respect the altitude
Headaches and short breath on the first day are normal at 8,600 feet. Coca tea helps, so does water, and so does scheduling Monserrate for day two.
Sundays are for the Ciclovia
Main avenues close to cars on Sunday mornings and the city cycles, runs and walks. Museums are busy on Sundays and many close Mondays.

Is Bogota cold?

Cool, not cold: highs in the 60s Fahrenheit all year with rain possible any afternoon. A jacket and an umbrella, every day.
