What to do in Guatemala City and Antigua

Guatemala City is the airport; Antigua, the old colonial capital under three volcanoes, is an hour away and where almost everyone stays. Pacaya volcano is a morning's hike, Lake Atitlan is a long day, the market at Chichicastenango runs twice a week, and the Maya city of Tikal is a flight north. Tours collect from Antigua hotels and, with notice, from the capital.

  1. 01

Antigua walking tour and a coffee farm

The ruined churches, the arch, the markets and a working coffee farm on the slopes above town. A full day on foot and by shuttle.

  2. 02

    Pacaya volcano hike

A two-hour walk up an active volcano to lava fields warm enough to roast marshmallows. Moderate effort, horses available. Morning or sunset.

  3. 03

    Lake Atitlan and the villages

The lake ringed by volcanoes, by boat to San Juan La Laguna's weavers and painters and Santiago. About three hours each way; a long day or an overnight.

  4. 04

    Chichicastenango market

The largest indigenous market in Central America, Thursdays and Sundays: textiles, masks, produce and the church steps thick with incense. Often combined with the lake.

  5. 05

    Acatenango overnight hike

A hard climb to camp at 12,000 feet facing Fuego, which erupts through the night. For fit hikers with a day to recover.

  6. 06

Tikal by air from Guatemala City

The early flight to Flores, the pyramids above the jungle canopy with a guide, and the evening flight back. A long day; a night in Flores is the comfortable version.
