What to do in Guadalajara
Guadalajara is Mexico's second city and the home of two things the world associates with the country: tequila and mariachi. The town of Tequila and its agave fields are about an hour west, Lake Chapala an hour south, and the craft markets of Tlaquepaque are a short ride from the center. The city itself is a day of plazas, the cathedral and the Orozco murals in the Hospicio Cabanas.
01
Tequila town and a distillery
Agave fields, a working distillery and a tasting in the town that gave the drink its name. By van, or by the tourist train that runs on weekends.
02
Tlaquepaque and Tonala crafts
Blown glass, ceramics and furniture workshops, with a lunch of birria or tortas ahogadas. Tonala's street market runs Thursdays and Sundays.
03
Historic center and the Orozco murals
The cathedral, Teatro Degollado and the Hospicio Cabanas, where Orozco's Man of Fire covers the dome. A guide makes the murals make sense.
04
Lake Chapala and Ajijic
Mexico's largest lake and the lakeside town that drew a generation of retirees. A slow day of the malecon, murals and lunch by the water.
05
Food and mariachi night
Tortas ahogadas, birria and carne en su jugo, then mariachi at the Plaza de los Mariachis or a cantina. Guides know the stands and the bands.
