What to do in San Juan
San Juan packs a lot into a small island. Old San Juan's blue cobblestones and two Spanish forts are the first day; El Yunque rainforest is an hour east; and the bioluminescent lagoon at Fajardo is best on a dark, moonless night. Culebra's Flamenco Beach is a boat trip for a full day. Tours collect from Condado, Isla Verde and the old town.
01
Old San Juan and the forts
El Morro and San Cristobal, the city walls, the colorful streets and the pigeons of Parque de las Palomas, with a guide who knows the stories. Food stops optional.
02
El Yunque rainforest
The only tropical rainforest in the US forest system: waterfalls, a natural water slide and short trails. Half or full day, with hotel pickup.
03
Bioluminescent bay kayak
Paddle a mangrove channel into Laguna Grande at Fajardo and watch the water light up around your hands. Go on a moonless night.
04
Culebra and Flamenco Beach
A catamaran or ferry day to one of the Caribbean's clearest beaches, with snorkeling over the reef on the way. Long day, early start.
05
Rum, coffee and food
The Bacardi distillery across the bay, a coffee tasting or a food walk through Santurce and Old San Juan. Mofongo is the thing to order.

Good to know
- US citizens need no passport
- Puerto Rico is US territory: a driver's license is enough, your phone plan works and the currency is the dollar. Canadians and others need the same documents as for the mainland US.
- Check the moon for the bio bay
- The glow is faint under a full moon. Tours run every night; pick a date near the new moon if you can.
Before you go

Questions before you book
Do I need a car in San Juan?
Not for the old town or the beaches. Day trips east and the ferry to Culebra are easier with a tour than with a rental and the ferry lines.
Does El Yunque need a reservation?
Some areas of the forest use a timed reservation system in busy periods. Tours handle entry; if you go on your own, check the forest service site first.
How do I book these tours?
Each "See tours" button opens Viator's listings for that experience in San Juan, with live prices, dates, reviews and the cancellation terms. You book and pay there. All Travel Fun earns a commission on bookings made through those links; it does not change what you pay.
Can your agents book tours over the phone?
Our agents book flights. Call to price the flight to San Juan; book the tours on Viator once your dates are fixed.
