What to do in Vancouver

Vancouver sits between the ocean and the Coast Mountains, so the outdoors starts at the city limits. The suspension bridge and Grouse Mountain are across the harbour, Whistler is a two-hour drive up the Sea to Sky Highway, and whales feed in the strait from spring to fall. Victoria on Vancouver Island is a long day by ferry. Tours collect from downtown hotels.

  1. 01

Capilano Suspension Bridge and Grouse Mountain

A 450-foot bridge over a rainforest canyon, then the gondola up Grouse for the view and, in summer, the lumberjack show and the bears. Half or full day.

  2. 02

Whistler and the Sea to Sky Highway

Shannon Falls, the Sea to Sky Gondola at Squamish and the village at Whistler, with the Peak 2 Peak gondola in season. About two hours each way.

  3. 03

    Stanley Park by bike

The six-mile seawall loop past the totem poles, Lions Gate Bridge and the beaches. Guided rides stop for the stories; rentals if you would rather go alone.

  4. 04

    Granville Island food tour

The public market, the breweries and the artisan studios under the bridge. Samples all the way through.

  5. 05

    Whale watching

Orcas and humpbacks in the Salish Sea, roughly April to October, by covered boat or open zodiac. Three to five hours from the harbour.

  6. 06

    Victoria and Butchart Gardens

Ferry across to Vancouver Island, the gardens, the Inner Harbour and the parliament buildings. A 12 to 13 hour day, or an overnight.

Good to know

Pack for rain, even in summer
Vancouver is a rainforest city. A light shell and shoes that can get wet make every outdoor day better.
Whales have a season
Sightings are reliable from late spring through early fall and operators guarantee them in that window. Winter trips are rare.
